I am pleased to welcome, Rachel Donnelly, as Put It There’s guest blogger this month!
As an after loss consultant, I often witness the aftermath of unforeseen challenges that arise when accessing a loved one’s digital legacy. These stories, though varied, share a common thread: the difficulty of navigating digital assets left behind after someone passes away. Take, for example, the story of my client John, who tragically lost precious memories stored in his late wife’s digital accounts. His experience underscores the importance of not only proactive planning, but also digital asset organization, or at this time of year, “spring cleaning your digital legacy” .
But there’s hope. Just as we organize our physical spaces, we can—and should—tend to our digital spaces. To guide you, I’ve outlined a brief roadmap to “spring cleaning” your digital legacy, ensuring it’s as organized and accessible as your home and office.
Roadmap to Spring Cleaning Your Digital Legacy:
Inventory Your Digital Assets:
Begin by casting a wide net to encompass all your digital footprints. This includes social media profiles, email accounts, digital storage platforms, and even online banking accounts. Creating a comprehensive inventory is the crucial first step in organizing your digital legacy.
Utilize Online Planning Tools:
Take advantage of platforms like Apple’s Legacy Contact and Google’s Inactive Account Manager. These tools allow you to designate trusted individuals who can access and manage your digital accounts in the event of your incapacity or passing. Setting up these tools ensures that your digital life remains accessible to your chosen contacts.
Securely Store Your Information:
Invest in a reliable password manager or digital vault to safeguard your login credentials and important documents. These tools not only enhance security but also ensure that your loved ones can easily access vital information when needed. By centralizing your digital assets in a secure location, you streamline the process of managing your digital legacy.
Consult with an Estate Planning Attorney:
Work with a qualified estate planning attorney to incorporate your digital assets into your overall estate plan. Your attorney can provide guidance on drafting clear instructions for your executor regarding the management and distribution of your digital estate. By formalizing your wishes in legal documents, you provide clarity and peace of mind to your loved ones.
The task of spring cleaning your digital assets may seem daunting, but it’s a vital aspect of comprehensive legacy planning. By taking proactive steps to organize and secure your digital assets, you ensure that your loved ones can easily navigate your digital footprint in your absence. Remember, preparation is key to preserving your digital legacy for future generations.
Warm regards,
Rachel Donnelly
