In my 21 years as a Professional Organizer plus almost 10 years as a residential Realtor, I’ve been going into homes for 30+ years. It’s been fun to see changing decorative and organizing trends through the years. Some have gone over well, and some have not.
As we celebrate National Get Organized Month, here are 4 organizing trends we are predicting for 2025:
1. A continued trend with the marriage of function and aesthetics as design elements continue to incorporate storage and organization. When I first began organizing in 2001, if a product was pretty it wasn’t functional, and if it was functional it likely wasn’t too pretty. Now, there is an array of attractive furniture that has useful storage, office supplies in pretty patterns and colors and the like.
2. Sustainability will continue to be a theme as more and more products are made with the environment in mind. Plastics are making their way out in lieu of wood or bamboo materials.
3. Customization – The Container Store’s “Everything Organized” product line is taking successful products but adding features such as optional dividers, lids and other features. Their Elfa closet systems have been upgraded and tweaked as well with lots more features available. The Container Store does their research, and I have no doubt these features came about as a result of a lot of customer feedback.
4. Simplifying – As more and more people contend with busy, hectic lives, many are looking for ways to streamline. If not completely on the minimalistic lifestyle, then I do see signs of being more intentional with what to keep and buy (or maybe because I talk ad nauseum with clients about it). Whether it’s because we are recognizing more and more how wasteful we are with food and items going to landfills or because we feel like we have just way too much stuff, I am working with clients who just want less. Remember the more you own, the more upkeep there is, which takes time and energy away from other priorities. Even a #2 pencil serves no purpose if we don’t take care of it and keep it where we need it.
As 2024 comes to an end and we all await what 2025 has in store, let’s observe together what organizing trends become apparent.
Happy, healthy new year to all!
