Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and while we often associate this day with romantic gestures and sweet surprises, it’s also the perfect time to show some love to your home. A well-organized home not only reduces stress but also creates a more inviting and comfortable atmosphere for you and your loved ones.
Additionally, I have been first-hand witness to home organizing being a source of strain between spouses, partners and family members. If that’s been the case for you, then what better gift than that of truly listening to your partner, finding compromise, and working together to create a space that works for BOTH of you? Lovingly and supportively work on these areas with your partner.
With that said, here are some areas of your home to focus on to help make this Valentine’s Day a little extra special by showing love to your home.
Declutter Common Spaces:
Take a critical look at your shared spaces and identify items you no longer need. Donate or discard items that no longer serve a purpose or are special in some way. I highly encourage you to engage your spouse or partner in this exercise to open the lines of communication and find common ground. Pick a charity organization that pulls on both of your heart strings.
Should you find that you do not agree, or one is more able to purge than the other, then compromise by agreeing to each pick a certain number of items. If there is that one memento that is super special to one and not the other, see if that person would be willing to put it in a place that he/she uses.
Clearing out unnecessary clutter will open up space and create a more inviting environment for your Valentine’s Day celebration.
Organize Your Kitchen:
If you plan to prepare a romantic dinner at home, having an organized kitchen is essential. Start by decluttering your countertops, which often fall prey to “flat surface syndrome”, as I call it. Clean out the refrigerator, pantry and freezer of old, expired foods. Ensure that your cooking utensils, pots, and pans are easily accessible. A well-organized kitchen will not only make meal preparation smoother but also allow you to focus on spending quality time with your partner, perhaps even cooking together.
Organize Your Entertainment Space
If you plan to enjoy a movie night or play board games, make sure your entertainment space is well-organized. It’s definitely not romantic to cuddle up with clothing, dishes, toys and other random household items all around. Store DVDs, board games, and remote controls in designated storage containers or shelves. Ensure your entertainment area is tidy and inviting for a cozy night in.
Create a Relaxing Bedroom Retreat
After a romantic evening, you’ll want to retire to a tranquil and organized bedroom. Declutter your nightstands and dressers (again that flat surface syndrome is quite common in these areas). Gather up any items on the floor and clear off the bathroom counters. Lastly, ensure that your bed is neatly made with fresh linens.
Keepsakes/Memorabilia
Any special cards or notes from your spouse, partner or children may be worth keeping. Create a keepsake bin or box to collect these special items. If you want items to stay well preserved, consider getting ones that are acid free.

Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love and those who are special to us. We want our homes to be a place for family and happy memories. So, in that spirit show some love to your home as well.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
